Reza Shahabi on Medical Treatment strike

Reza Shahabi was also attacked as recently the security forces raided the section 350 of Evin-prison and physical abused and assaulted the prisoners.
They tugged Reza Shahabi and threw him violently out of bed by holding his feet. This brutal act intensified the back and leg pain of Reza.
Despite this situation the chief of sick ward of prison refuse to send him and other political prisoners to a hospital out of the prison with the feeble excuses such as: the minimum number of requests is not reached or you simulate. Even accessing the sick ward in prison means many body searches, insult and offense.

In protest against these conditions Reza Shahabi started a Medical Treatment Refusal beginning August 11, 2013.

Communiqué number 54 of “Reza Shahabi Defense Committee“

The back pain of Reza Shahabi has now referred to his left leg, so that he was transferred to the sick ward of the Evin- prison last week. Due to the lack of medical treatment and being insulted by the sick ward responsible and the physician Reza requested to go back to prison. He has severe pain and can walk with the help of his prison mates; he receives morphine and cortisone injections against his severe pain. The prison authorities refused to transfer him to hospital for MRT, because of critical conditions of “election”.  They accuse him to exaggerate his pain and pomposity.

At the same time, Robabe Rezaei, the wife of Shahabi has been summoned to the intelligent Ministry and was interrogated. She was questioned why she spread the news about the situation of her husband. She answered:” I did nothing illegal and only answer the people, who contact me

Communiqué number 52 of “Reza Shahabi Defense Committee“: Reza Shahabi’s health is deteriorating

Reza Shahabi, the imprisoned worker, is facing deteriorating health. The intense pain in his lower back area, neck, his left foot and left arm began just 20 days after he was returned to prison. Due to the huge pain, he has difficulties to sit, walk and also sleep. More than 20 days ago he asked to be examined by a neurosurgeon, but the prison authorities answered him: “there are not enough requests for a neurosurgeon; we cannot provide a doctor any time you ask”. Beside these, during his temporary release he was under dental treatment, which was interrupted, because he was returned to prison. Now he is suffering severe headache and pain in eyes. His family organized a dentist visit, but the prosecutor did not permit him the dentist visit. His reason for refusal was: “You had a long prison leave”.
Shahabi was returned to prison on April 15th.

Prosecutor refused the extension of temporarily release of Behnam Ebrahim Zadeh

BEHNAM EBRAHIMZADEH AND HIS SON NIMA IN HOSPITAL
According to the blog of Behnam Ebrahim Zadeh family, labor and children rights´ activist Behnam Ebrahimzadeh had to appear in court as scheduled on April 9, to request extension of his temporarily release.
His request was refused, despite severe illness of his son, who is suffering leukemia and under treatment.
The Prosecutor supported his decision with the reason: “The Ministry of Intelligence and National Security did not approve the extension of temporarily release. We need this approval, up until now they did not contact us.”
At the same time it is said that also the request for temporarily release extension of Shiva Nazar Ahari (human rights activist), Reza Shahabi and Pouria Shapari has been rejected. It seems possible that request of Mohammad Davoodi will also be rejected.
Obviously in the run up to June’s elections this Ministry plans to bring these activists back into the prison.

Communiqué number 44 of “Reza Shahabi Defense Committee“

The third hunger strike of Reza Shahabi is very alarming –Mahmoud Salehi, the spokesman of the Reza Shahabi Defense Committee addressed the workers, the workers' People and labour organizations.
Reza Shahabi the imprisoned worker, the Treasurer and Executive Board member of the Syndicate of workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company “Vahed” worte a protest letter against the brutal prison conditions and lack of basic medical treatment in prison with the title: “I am just one example of the violation against health of prisoners”. In this letter he announced that to put his protest into action he will in first step refuse taking his medication and medical treatment and if no improvement action is initiated he will go on hunger strike.
After being insult and mistreatment by the prison warder he changed his mind and decided to go on hunger strike.
This is his third hunger strike during the last three years, which can endanger his health seriously and can lead to nonreversible damages.
In addition to his post-surgery and chronic suffering he also suffers from high blood pressure followed by nose bleedings.
The Reza Shahabi defense committee strongly protests such conditions and mistreatment, which forced Shahabi to make this decision. We state that the bad health condition of Reza and the history of his hunger strikes make him more vulnerable by the consequences of another hunger strike.
Therefore, we declare the officials, who refuse Reza and many other prisoners the fundamental human rights, responsible for the consequences.
The “Reza Shahabi Defense Committee“ appeals to the workers and labour organizations to protest in any possible form against the conditions that Reza Shahabi is facing.
