Strike at Copper Smelting Plant in Khatoun Abad and intervention of special forces unit

About 300 copper smelting workers in Khatoun Abad, in province Kerman, closed the entrance gate of the complex to protest the empty promises of officials since Wednesday.
Following the order of the head of government,  about two years ago, to close the sub-contracting companies and signing direct contract with workers, the 2400 workers at Meiduk copper complex and copper smelting plant Khatoun Abad were joined the investment copper company. The investment copper company promised the workers to hire them one year after the expiration of their contracts by direct contracts. Now, after the end of 18 months, the workers are still up in the air.
Since the workers closed the entrance gate on Wednesday, the supply of raw materials and concentrate is cut off and the factory shutted down.
Last night with intervention of special forces unit the protesting workers were dispersed, but they are still on sit-down strike inside the complex and demanding the implementation of provisions of the contract.
One of the factory officials said: there will be no employment at the private copper company. He added that the best condition is the hiring by the copper investment company, which is also the current situation of these workers.
It is to mention that on 24th of January 2004 the protest of copper miners of Khatoun Abad was attacked from the air and ground; four workers were shot dead.

Second consecutive day of protest

Refined sugar and sugar factory workers representative in the city of Ahvaz said: a group of workers of this factory, who did not have receive their wages for the last 27 months, due to the closure of the factory production line, are living in uncertainty. The first major labor strike in the new Iranian year

Hundred dismissed workers of Safa Pipe Rolling factory entered the factory to protest their unfair dismissal and the non-payment of their wages in the first morning hours of April 21. As they entered the factory, other workers joined them and stopped the production.
According to the reports, a day earlier, the employer did not extend the contract with one hundred of workers and dismissed them.  He also extended the contracts of further 1100 workers (with six-month or 12-months contract) only for month to facilitate the future dismissals.
On April 9th, the employer was supposed to pay a part of the delayed wages. At this day, not only the delayed wages were not paid, but also one hundred workers were dismissed and the contract of the rest of workers was extended only for one month.
According to the latest reports as other workers join the strike, the factory managers tried to threaten them, but faced a backlash by workers, which in some cases ended to severe verbal clashes between factory workers and managers.
The strike at Safa Pipe rolling plant is continuing with the joining of night shift workers to the strike.

The petrochemical workers´ cooperatives will not replace the manpower contractors

Based on this report, the authorities had promised earlier that after the formation of workers´ cooperatives, they will sign employment contracts with these cooperatives, rather than outsourcing work to the contracting companies. Now that workers bear the heavy costs and have formed cooperatives, the authorities say “we can't leave this important issue to workers´ cooperatives”.

It is to mention that in December 2012, a letter signed by Ahmadreza Haraf (Director of human resource development of the national petrochemical industries)was issued that permits the workers´ cooperatives to sign employment contracts with petrochemical industries, for a period of three consecutive years. This letter stated that workers, who have not been contracted directly, will be hired via workers´ cooperatives.

Prosecutor refused the extension of temporarily release of Behnam Ebrahim Zadeh

BEHNAM EBRAHIMZADEH AND HIS SON NIMA IN HOSPITAL
According to the blog of Behnam Ebrahim Zadeh family, labor and children rights´ activist Behnam Ebrahimzadeh had to appear in court as scheduled on April 9, to request extension of his temporarily release.
His request was refused, despite severe illness of his son, who is suffering leukemia and under treatment.
The Prosecutor supported his decision with the reason: “The Ministry of Intelligence and National Security did not approve the extension of temporarily release. We need this approval, up until now they did not contact us.”
At the same time it is said that also the request for temporarily release extension of Shiva Nazar Ahari (human rights activist), Reza Shahabi and Pouria Shapari has been rejected. It seems possible that request of Mohammad Davoodi will also be rejected.
Obviously in the run up to June’s elections this Ministry plans to bring these activists back into the prison.

Petrochemical workers fired after strike

Kabele Surrey, the new shareholder of the petrochemical Company in Kurdistan province fired 10 workers with long period of employment at this company.  According to the report the workers went a month ago on strike for 12 days, demanding their delayed wages.

It should be noted that Surrey is also one of the shareholders of the Ehyasanat factory, which a few months ago, had fired most of its workers due to slump in sales.
